The tradition of lighting a bayberry candle during the New Year originates from colonial America. Early American settlers, particularly in New England, would make candles from bayberry wax, which was more difficult to produce but burned cleaner and longer than other candles.
Legend has it that lighting a bayberry candle on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve would bring good luck, wealth, and health in the coming year. The tradition is often accompanied by the rhyme:
"A bayberry candle burned to the socket brings health to the body and wealth to the pocket."
By burning the candle all the way down, it is believed that one ensures prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead.
