What are our candles scented with?

Curious about what’s in our candles?
We get it! You care about what you bring into your home, and so do we. That’s why at Serendipity, we’re proud to use ingredients that are clean, safe, and responsibly sourced.

So, what scents our candles?
We use a custom blend of essential oils and naturally derived fragrance oils that are:

  • Free of parabens

  • Free of phthalates

  • Free of phosphates

  • Non-toxic and safe for indoor burning

This blend gives you long-lasting, beautiful scents without compromising safety or performance.

Why not 100% essential oils?
We love them too, but essential oils don’t always perform well in candles. They can fade quickly, burn inconsistently, and some favorite scents—like lilac or vanilla—don’t even exist in essential oil form.

What are naturally derived fragrance oils?
They’re high-quality scent blends made by isolating natural fragrance molecules from plants, fruits, or flowers. This gives us the flexibility to create unique, consistent, and safe candles that fill your space with joy.

  • Scent throw (or lack of it)

Essential oils are highly volatile and can dissipate quickly during the candle-making process, especially when exposed to heat. That means by the time your candle cools and is ready to burn, much of the scent may already be gone — resulting in a candle that smells great in the jar, but doesn’t actually scent your space when burned.

  • Poor performance and consistency

Some essential oils don’t burn cleanly or evenly in wax, and others can produce an off-putting or even smoky aroma when lit. Because they don’t blend consistently, candles made with only essential oils can be unpredictable and difficult to replicate.

  • Cost and sustainability

Many essential oils are extremely expensive due to how much plant material is required to extract a small amount of oil. For example, it takes over 250 pounds of lavender to make just one pound of lavender essential oil. To use only essential oils in candles would make them cost-prohibitive for most customers and unsustainable long-term.

  • Limited scent options

Not all fragrances exist in essential oil form. Scents like vanilla, sea salt, or certain florals (like lilac) aren’t available as essential oils — or are incredibly rare and difficult to work with. By using naturally derived fragrance oils, we can offer a wider variety of beautiful, unique, and consistent scents — while still being conscious of safety and purity.
