What’s Really In Your Candle?

What’s Really In Your Candle?

At Serendipity, we’re proud of the ingredients we use in our candles — and we understand that more and more customers want to know exactly what’s inside the products they bring into their homes.

So, what are our candles scented with?

We use a carefully curated blend of essential oils and naturally derived fragrance oils that are:

Free of parabens
✅ Free of phthalates
✅ Free of phosphates
Clean, non-toxic, and safe for indoor burning

This unique blend allows us to offer beautiful, long-lasting scents while maintaining the safety, purity, and performance standards we stand by.

Why not 100% pure essential oils?

It’s a great question — and one we get often. While we love essential oils and use them where possible, there are a few key reasons why candles made with only pure essential oils don’t always work as well:

  1. Scent throw (or lack of it)
Essential oils are highly volatile and can dissipate quickly during the candle-making process, especially when exposed to heat. That means by the time your candle cools and is ready to burn, much of the scent may already be gone — resulting in a candle that smells great in the jar, but doesn’t actually scent your space when burned.

  2. Poor performance and consistency
Some essential oils don’t burn cleanly or evenly in wax, and others can produce an off-putting or even smoky aroma when lit. Because they don’t blend consistently, candles made with only essential oils can be unpredictable and difficult to replicate.

  3. Cost and sustainability
Many essential oils are extremely expensive due to how much plant material is required to extract a small amount of oil. For example, it takes over 250 pounds of lavender to make just one pound of lavender essential oil. To use only essential oils in candles would make them cost-prohibitive for most customers and unsustainable long-term.

  4. Limited scent options
Not all fragrances exist in essential oil form. Scents like vanilla, sea salt, or certain florals (like lilac) aren’t available as essential oils — or are incredibly rare and difficult to work with. By using naturally derived fragrance oils, we can offer a wider variety of beautiful, unique, and consistent scents — while still being conscious of safety and purity.

So what are naturally derived fragrance oils?

These are high-quality fragrance oils made by isolating scent compounds found in nature (like a molecule from a flower or fruit) and blending them in a safe and controlled way to create a beautiful, stable scent. They allow us to deliver the kind of long-lasting, room-filling fragrance that our customers love — without compromising on quality or safety.
